Welcome back to our recurring segment: People that pissed off the internet this week! Meet the contestants: we have actor Timothée Chalamet, podcaster/influencer/comedian (?) Jake Shane, and the jealous friend of viral TikTok discourse fame (@farah_ammarah). Before we overanalyze the situation (as we love to do) here are some spark notes of what provoked think pieces, video diaries, and discourse galore:
Timothée Chalamet: The most recent dent to the A-list actors reputation comes from his commentary demeaning traditional art forms like opera and ballet in a recent interview. He said “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.” For obvious reasons, the pushback was immediate and scathing.
Jake Shane: The young octopus lover is facing criticism for the way he handled celebrity interviews at the Vanity Fair carpet for the Oscars. Easy target for the “stop giving influencers mics” crowd.
The Jealous Friend: In a now viral Tiktok Farah shared her experience ending a friendship with someone she felt intensely jealous of in a way that drained her energy. This fractured the internet with many people condemning her, others sharing their experiences with jealous friends, and some agreeing with her take. In summary, she wasn’t wrong about this being something we should talk about more!
What is particularly curious about this series of events is the pendulum swing in the public consensus. Just last year, the internet lit up with praise when young Timothée Chalamet remarked “I want to be one of the greats” on stage at the SAG awards. Even this publication fell for the heartfelt speech! So what changed in the last 12 months that has resulted in headlines like “It’s Time for a Chalamet Break” (The Hollywood Reporter) and “Timothée Chalamet Wanted It Too Much” (The Ringer).
The truth is, he gave us (collectively, as a society) the ick! There are many reasons for this, but let’s just recap a few…there was his commentary re: calling a child-free life “bleak” and saying that procreation is the purpose of life. The Marty Supreme press tour + corresponding aesthetic (it appears he may be attending the Kardashian school of cashing in on stolen culture). Then most recently, of course, his comments on the arts. Now one could argue that this is all true to his vision of being one of the greats, he has committed himself to the role so to speak. But in truth it comes across as inauthentic, as audacious (derogatory). Where his original speech was aspirational and inspiring, his corresponding actions have come across as entitled.
Similarly, Jake Shane has been having a moment with a capital M. He recently earned his broadway debut, had his podcast Therapuss picked up by Netflix, and became the Chief Creative Officer of the candy company Katjes. So per the circle of life he was due for some backlash. The underwhelming red carpet performance in contrast to his recent exposure made him a great candidate for criticism. It wasn’t a great showing of his strengths, and he came off as overwhelmed and underprepared. Perhaps most damning was the question from Kris Jenner “How did you get this gig?” to which he responded “I really don’t know”. Underwhelming carpet interviews are nothing new, but the injustice of a perceived imposter gave people ample ammunition to hate.
Which brings us to the jealous friend conversation. A key element being left out of the conversation around this video, are the creators comments about why she’s jealous of her friend. It isn’t just that she has the life this creator wants, but that she got there without having to work for it. She watched her dream life get handed to someone else. While people in the comments are encouraging her to use that jealousy as motivation, it’s hard to be inspired to work when the object of your envy hasn’t had to.
This “imposter ick” is the downfall of our most hated contestants today. We previously encouraged our readers to not be afraid to be seen trying. A word which here means “attempt to achieve or attain”. This is still true! But beware of asking for accolades while you’re mid-attempt. People may applaud you in the process, don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ve arrived and acting like it. The good news is that everything is a win when the goal is experience. You can learn from your failures, even the public ones. I don’t doubt there are plenty of wins and L’s ahead for today’s subjects, and the same goes for you.
