If your algorithm is boring, so are you
the manifestation girlies were low-key right... you really DO create your own reality
It’s another week on the internet and the everygirlz are getting vulnerable and #authentic (wouldn’t want to be mistaken for a boring influencer!). The scary truth is… Yes, we have watched and rewatched every variation of Cinderella that Disney, Hallmark, and their clones will produce. We’re talking ‘A Cinderella Story’, ‘Another Cinderella Story’, etc., etc… and you know what? We eat it up every time! Just like we ate up anything from the Barbie franchise (Princess and the Pauper fans know!) and the Magic Tree House books, once upon a time. Because when we find a winning formula, we seek it out, we reproduce it, and we consume it over and over and over. It’s comfortable! It’s cozy! Some would say it’s human nature.
What does this have to do with the state of the internet? Well, we don’t know about y’all… (because believe it or not, our algorithms may be very different!) but our FYP and various online spaces have been overrun with discourse about one gal calling NYC influencers boring and all of them collectively crashing out in response. The biggest takeaways from this seem to be:
If this is the hate comment that has you up in arms… there’s probably some truth to it. (We thought they were all reading the Let Them Theory and completely immune to this now…?)
If your FYP looks like that… it’s partially your fault.
As much as we love to blame Father Algorithm, ultimately it’s trying to serve us the content we follow and engage with. Yes, certain creators get a leg up because they are more popular and palatable, but we are not exempt from blame here. No one is just a bystander in their consumption! No one was forcing us to read every single edition of The Boxcar Children! (if they were, you may be entitled to compensation). This is a great time for us all to audit the type of content we actually consume. Because you have more power than you think. Why did they make 18 versions of the Cinderella story? Because we kept watching them. Why are there 18 versions of the same influencer? Because… you get the gist. So, here’s a little behind the scenes from the media industry. Every week, we post some content that may be a smidge on the more trivial side. Think: “Taylor Swift Inspired Nail Ideas” or something along those lines. Often, we get a comment or two about brainrot, or you know, “the death of real journalism,” etc. Here’s the secret… that will likely be our top clicked article of the week. Like it or not, there is a mismatch between the content we say we want to consume, and the content we actually give our attention to. If you want your feed to change, put your money (attention) where your mouth is.
The sinister side of this comes in when we realize how truly insulated this makes us. On the one hand we’ve seen the effects in the shock and occasional outrage following this awards season. Like, how could Anora (another Cinderella story!) sweep when Wicked was EVERYWHERE? How could ‘Cowboy Carter’ have won Album of the Year when your entire FYP was Billie Eilish stans? How could this president have been elected when… you get it! Our online world is not an accurate predictor of the real world.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t include an obligatory paragraph tying our weekly conclusion to a push to get yourself offline. So here it is! You’ve been warned. Yes, influencer content can get boring! Yes, you could combat that by diversifying your feed and following interesting creators. But ALSO, you could use this moment of boredom with the very thing that has kept us overstimulated to embrace it. Get off your phone, and let life be the interesting thing again. Seek out cool people and creators outside of your screen. Get outside the bubble of your algorithm. We’re not saying if you spent more time talking to your cousin’s boyfriend’s sister’s friend from college over drinks in someone’s tiny apartment you could have accurately predicted Anora’s sweep… but we’re not NOT saying that. In the spirit of having things to talk about…
In Other News:
Lady Gaga’s Mayhem dropped and we can confirm that gay bars and SoulCycle classes will never be the same. Also, she promoted the album by going on Las Culturistas which is a beautiful moment for chronically online gays everywhere.
Despite what some people’s FYP wanted them to think would happen, Anora took home Best Picture at the Oscars, along with four other awards, making it the most decorated film of the night. A tiny indie movie about a sex worker swept the Academy Awards!!! Life is beautiful you can do anything!!! (Especially if you have an $18 million dollar marketing budget.)
Terrible week to be from the East Coast, as Amanda Seyfried’s cover of California by Joni Mitchell is the most gorg thing to grace the internet in weeks. Her starring role in the biopic is imminent.
Trisha Paytas announced she’s expecting her third child, so we’ll circle back in 9 months with a headline about which old famous person passed and was reincarnated as her baby.
Gabby Windey won ‘Traitors’ (with Dylan Efron and 2 other players), got secretly married, and we’re just obsessed with her and everything she does.
Sick of your dating algorithm too? Try throwing a flirting party.
Things We Hate Right Now:
Weather purgatory! Sometimes it’s hot, sometimes it’s cold, either way, you’re carrying a jacket you don’t want at some point!
David from ‘Love Is Blind’. How are you in your 30s and can’t get over the fact that your fiancée had a casual hookup before you guys met?! Please be serious. On that note, pretty much every man from this season could be on this list.
Southwest getting rid of their “bags fly free’ policy… we literally can’t have anything!
