Do you need to get it off your “desk”? Enter: Per My Last Email, an anonymous series where we’re getting the real deal on how women feel about their careers—the frustrating struggles, the joyful moments, and everything in-between. Whether you’re looking for real advice or just validation that we’re possibly all going through it right now, find their responses below.
How old are you?
26
What is your job?
Law clerk to a judge
What is your yearly income?
$77k
What is your relationship status?
Single
Do you have any children?
No
Did you attend college?
Yes!
If yes, are you currently using the degree you went to school for?
Yes!
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
A writer
What do you think your younger self would think of you today?
She would be in awe, but also probably not surprised. I've always been extremely driven and type A. She might even think "there's still more work to be done," lol.
Do you love your work?
Yes! I have a wonderful job and wonderful boss. I have a lot of flexibility with my job and enjoy the freedom. My co-workers are amazing and that truly makes all the difference.
Do you think you should love your work?
Yes, or at least some aspect of it. If you don't love the "work" itself, you should at least enjoy the people you work with. If you don't love the people you work with, hopefully you enjoy the work itself. If you don't like either of those things, hopefully you enjoy the city or location of your job. And if none of those things are true, get a new job!
What is your work-life balance like?
Great! My job provides a lot of freedom and flexibility. I work strictly 9-5, which is not typical for a lawyer. I get off work and walk my dog and then play mah Jong with my girl friends or grab drinks or whatever else!
What is one thing you had to learn the hard way?
Always assume your co-workers will repeat everything you say to your boss!
What is something you wish you'd known early in your career?
I'm still early in my career, so I don't know if I can answer this fully. But having a positive attitude in the workplace will change your life. Don't get caught up in the cycle of negativity or laziness from your co-workers. Keep the same bright eyed energy you had when you started your job. It's so refreshing to act like each day is my first day on the job. I have so much energy and passion and productivity. I do believe in burnout, but I think some of that can mitigated by avoiding negative office talk and taking care of your own mental health! Show up as the best version of yourself every day and remember why you started.
What is one piece of advice every woman needs to hear?
It's okay to be a girly girl in a man's world or corporate setting! Never lose your femininity or sense of identity for your work. Losing a sense of self is more devastating than losing a job. Jobs are replaceable, you are not!
What's one thing you're struggling with? (at work or otherwise)
I just got my heart broken. My boyfriend ended our relationship and I'm devastated. Every day feels like a struggle and I'm sad all the time. This is why it's so important to work with great people. They pick me up every day and make work enjoyable, which makes me less sad!
What's one thing bringing you joy? (at work or otherwise)
I'm moving into a new house and I'm getting to renovate/decorate it all on my own. I'm so excited to move in!
Is there anything else you want to get off your chest/desk?
Yes, to anyone reading this, I love you, and you matter! Don't let anyone dim your light! We only have one life to live and every day is a new chance for us to start over and open a new chapter.
